A cake for a Grammy win!

by

Band Portugal. The Man celebrated their Grammy win for “Feel It Still” with this custom rice cooker cake. It’s said that when they first started they bought a mini van, a rice cooker and a 5 pound bag of rice. They toured for a year living in the van and eating nothing but rice. Clearly it was worth it!

It was a privilege to create a cake for these awesome guys. This rice cooker was a chocolate cake with almost an entire bottle of Jameson thrown in for good measure.

Who else can’t get “Feel It Still” out of their head?

A styled shoot fit for a Queen

by

A styled shoot we collaborated on in Alberta last year is featured on the Wedluxe Magazine website! The wedding set up was inspired by Queen Elizabeth I.

We shot at two dreamy locations – the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and Fairmont Banff Springs. It was such a fun day getting to meet and work with such a talented group of vendors. View more images from the day and see additional vendors here.

Last night at VCC’s Flourish Gala, Emily was presented with the One To Watch – 2016 Outstanding Alumni Award”.

Emily graduated as a top student from the VCC Baking & Pastry Arts program in 2009. When she was told she had be nominated for and won an award she was surprised and very touched. She credits VCC from giving her a platform to start from all those years ago. Emily is extremely humbled to have her hard work recognized and celebrated.

Best Tasting Wedding Cake

by

When Pigs Fly Pastries competed for the title of “Best Tasting Wedding Cake” at the 7th annual BC Wedding Awards – and won!!

Emily presented voters and judges with a raspberry filled vanilla cupcake topped with a lime burst buttercream.
She had scowered the city high and low to find the rare “finger limes” she used on the Food Network last year to use in the lime icing, as well as garnish on top – making sure each taster got the perfect amount of lime flavour explosion.

Following the awards, Emily had this to say: “Although I’ll forever be the crazy finger lime girl after that speech, I am so proud to have been recognized by such amazing industry peers. I truly believe all cakes need to taste as good as they look, and put so much love into each one from start to finish.
Cheers to my talented fellow cake ladies who take the industry by storm, my beautiful friends and family who understand why they rarely get to see me, and to all of you for your continued love and support! A huge congratulations goes out to all the nominees, finalists and winners on another great year – can’t wait to see what everyone has in store for 2017!”

Thanks, everyone!

thx32015 so far has been a whirlwind of cakes, cupcakes and smiley faces. We worked non-stop fulfilling wedding orders this summer, partnering with so many new and wonderful clients. We also sprinkled in some fun birthday and corporate event cakes whenever possible. Long days and little sleep were our thing but somehow we still had a blast! Huge thanks to all of you for your continued support, and also your patience for our sometimes less than frequent updates. We are now working hard to get everything up to date, while balancing lots of food styling work on set, and preparing for the busy holiday season ahead! There have been a few top secret projects in the works that we will soon be allowed to release… can’t wait until we can share!

BC Wedding Awards

by

The Professional BC Wedding Awards are the longest running wedding industry awards in Canada. This event is a celebration of BC’s dynamic and creative wedding industry and When Pigs Fly Pastries was thrilled to be in the running for the 2014 Awards. Amongst the entries received from across the province, we were proud to be selected as one of the top three finalists for Best Wedding Cake in BC!
As first-timers to the Awards, this was an exciting achievement for us and it was a true pleasure to connect with other professionals who inject passion into the industry. Thank you to all of the couples we worked with in 2014 who put their trust in us for their special day. Also, sincere thanks to Amber Hughes Photography. Amber provided us with the exceptional photos she captured from Adrian & Clelia’s wedding, which was our recognized entry for the Awards. Can’t wait until next year!

Happy Birthday to the Vancouver Arc’teryx brand store!

This past Saturday the new West 4th location celebrated it’s first birthday. They invited the public to come in to enjoy refreshments, check out the new fall and winter lines, and even win some gear. We were more than happy to customize dozens of mini cupcakes for the party – which seemed to disappear faster than we could put them out! Congratulations Arc’teryx!

Cirque turns 30!

by

unnamed

Cirque Du Soleil celebrated it’s 30th birthday this year – and Vancouver was lucky enough to have them in town for the occasion! Our mayor, Gregor Robertson, dubbed June 16th as “Cirque Du Soleil Day” and lots of festitivies took place downtown.

When Pigs Fly Pastries worked with Cirque to create a cake design that reflected both their current show, “Totem”, as well as their 30th year. 19 cakes were created and sent all over the city to different media outlets as a part of a gift basket to show Cirque’s appreciation and to help celebrate!

Each cake had two small logo recreations, as well as a handmade fondant tree frog (one of the stars of Totem). It took a ton of organization and even more time, but we were thrilled with the outcome and feedback. As long time fans of Cirque this was a very exciting project to take on!

CFL Star Retires!

by

This past week we were so excited to be making the retirement cake for local football legend Angus Reid of the BC Lions!

Richmond boy Angus had been a well-known name to the city of Vancouver for over a decade now, playing since 2001. Although his football career may have had a rocky start due to health problems – he pushed through, breaking all barriers and showing everyone exactly what he was made of. As an offensive linesman he appeared in over 200 regular season games, 11 playoff contests, and 3 Grey Cup games with the BC Lions (winning 2 of the 3).

The veteran ended a 13 year long CFL career with a celebration with family, friends, colleagues and media at Ceili’s Pub in Kitsilano. We created 64 mini cupcakes decked out in Lions colours and his number. We also created a large recreation of one of his jerseys. Throughout the event we were excited to see a number of tweets from party go-ers about the cake and cupcakes, including a few from Angus himself. (See our favourite tweet below)

Congratulations on an amazing career, Angus! You are a great inspiration for every child looking to follow their dreams – with enough determination and will power anything is possible. All the best for the years to come!
