Cirque turns 30!

by

Cirque Du Soleil celebrated it’s 30th birthday this year – and Vancouver was lucky enough to have them in town for the occasion! Our mayor, Gregor Robertson, dubbed June 16th as “Cirque Du Soleil Day” and lots of festitivies took place downtown.

When Pigs Fly Pastries worked with Cirque to create a cake design that reflected both their current show, “Totem”, as well as their 30th year. 19 cakes were created and sent all over the city to different media outlets as a part of a gift basket to show Cirque’s appreciation and to help celebrate!

Each cake had two small logo recreations, as well as a handmade fondant tree frog (one of the stars of Totem). It took a ton of organization and even more time, but we were thrilled with the outcome and feedback. As long time fans of Cirque this was a very exciting project to take on!

Wonderland

Emily had the opportunity to do some food styling again, this time for the TV show Once Upon A Time In Wonderland. She was commissioned to make a number of treats on set, as well as a wedding cake for Alice herself! Have a peek for the wedding cake in the far background of the screenshots below. You can also see a simple homestyle checkerboard cake and some mini cupcakes made for a tea party scene that was part of the same episode.

CFL Star Retires!

by

This past week we were so excited to be making the retirement cake for local football legend Angus Reid of the BC Lions!

Richmond boy Angus had been a well-known name to the city of Vancouver for over a decade now, playing since 2001. Although his football career may have had a rocky start due to health problems – he pushed through, breaking all barriers and showing everyone exactly what he was made of. As an offensive linesman he appeared in over 200 regular season games, 11 playoff contests, and 3 Grey Cup games with the BC Lions (winning 2 of the 3).

The veteran ended a 13 year long CFL career with a celebration with family, friends, colleagues and media at Ceili’s Pub in Kitsilano. We created 64 mini cupcakes decked out in Lions colours and his number. We also created a large recreation of one of his jerseys. Throughout the event we were excited to see a number of tweets from party go-ers about the cake and cupcakes, including a few from Angus himself. (See our favourite tweet below)

Congratulations on an amazing career, Angus! You are a great inspiration for every child looking to follow their dreams – with enough determination and will power anything is possible. All the best for the years to come!

The Refinery Magazine – round 2!

1888722_10152196001028080_1628765692_nWe were thrilled to be able to work with the lovely ladies at the Refinery Magazine again – this time working on a “Bloom & Blush” feature for their spring issue. Inspired by the red, black and gold in the shoot we created a small dessert table for the mock wedding. The spread was shot at Colony Farms on a gorgeous winter day, both the sun and fog worked in our favour. Emily, along with the help of her assistant Megan Davies, were humbled to be working along side so many other talented women and businesses including Lisa of Ophelia and Romeo Photographers, Katie Elwood, Hope & Co., Celsia Florist, Adorn Atelier, Christie Graham, Frocks Modern, and Lovers Tempo. Be sure to check out the shoot in issue 5 of the Refinery Magazine, pages 156-164.

Simply Rose

by

This month I got to meet Rose of Simply Rose Photography. She is currently doing a “Vendor Series” of local wedding professionals on her blog. If you haven’t checked out her work you really should. She takes lots of bright, crisp photos and always seems to capture so much joy. I was so excited when she asked if she could come by the kitchen to snap some pictures!

Screen Shot 2013-12-23 at 11.59.25 PMWhile she was there I had fun experimenting with some kale flowers on a dummy wedding cake and finished up a Christmas themed cupcake order. Rose was so sweet and we had lots of fun chatting away while we worked. You can check out the When Pigs Fly blog post, as well as the rest of her beautiful posts here.

Did you hear a mention of WPFP on the radio today? You just may have! We dropped some goodies off for our friends at JRFM for their current Johnston’s promo “Pigs Flydays”. Emily felt like some flying pig themed cupcakes were the best way to spread the pigs fly love. Chocolate cupcakes with whipped peppermint ganache, and rum & eggnog cupcakes with cinnamon spice buttercream were on the menu – and from what we heard they were throughly enjoyed. Thanks to Docc, Amanda, Kelly & Terra for letting us stop by!
