More Film & TV fun!

by

It seems as soon as wedding season ends we are bombarded with orders for film stuff – which we LOVE. It’s always something fun and different, and definitely a nice change of pace after the summer months. Lately we have been up to our ears with it, creating everything from magical cupcake bouquets to elaborate tiered cakes to hundreds of fondant mini cakes.

See our work featured regularly in “Once Upon A Time” and new seasons of “Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce”, as well as smaller jobs on shows like “No Tomorrow”, “The Magicians”, “The Arrangement”, “Everything Everything”, and a couple of much anticipated block busters soon to be released…!

Top places to find Smash Cakes

by

Niko Cake Smash-29 We have been featured by VancouverMom for their picks on where to buy 1st birthday smash cakes! These sessions are always so much fun and are definitely recommended for anyone with a little one celebrating this milestone.

We often provide cakes to our friends at Family Creative Imagery for a full photography session. They generally do single portrait and family photos before everything gets messy -then let the kids go to town! The cost of these sessions start at $349 which includes the cake. If you’re interested in booking one click here.

Food Network!

When Pigs Fly Pastries was selected to compete on a new baking show called “Sugar Showdown”. We were flown to Toronto for a whirlwind trip to film in July. It was lots of fun and we met some awesome people – especially the other competitors surprisingly enough! Although we did quickly learn that cooking shows are much harder than they look on TV! This was a tough competition and it really tested our abilities when we given BEETS as our secret ingredient. We ended up doing a play on a carrot cake – switching out the grated carrots with grated beets, and adding pineapple, coconut and some lime buttercream to give it a tropical twist!

SugarShowdown

The episode aired on Cooking Channel in the States in January, and just recently aired on Food Network Canada. Since the show we have been overrun with lovely messages from clients, industry pros, friends, family & even perfect strangers! What a dream come true to compete, but having all of your support made it that much sweeter. We cannot wait to compete again!

Thanks, everyone!

thx32015 so far has been a whirlwind of cakes, cupcakes and smiley faces. We worked non-stop fulfilling wedding orders this summer, partnering with so many new and wonderful clients. We also sprinkled in some fun birthday and corporate event cakes whenever possible. Long days and little sleep were our thing but somehow we still had a blast! Huge thanks to all of you for your continued support, and also your patience for our sometimes less than frequent updates. We are now working hard to get everything up to date, while balancing lots of food styling work on set, and preparing for the busy holiday season ahead! There have been a few top secret projects in the works that we will soon be allowed to release… can’t wait until we can share!

“You have to try some of this cake…”

by

foodenvy.OUAT Did you spot our cake on Sunday’s episode of Once Upon A Time?

Will appeared to have a serious case of food envy when Belle declared to him “You have to try some of this cake – it’s delicious!”

deliciousGlad to know Belle – or maybe even actress Emilie de Ravin – is a fan of our chocolate fudge cake!

BC Wedding Awards

by

The Professional BC Wedding Awards are the longest running wedding industry awards in Canada. This event is a celebration of BC’s dynamic and creative wedding industry and When Pigs Fly Pastries was thrilled to be in the running for the 2014 Awards. Amongst the entries received from across the province, we were proud to be selected as one of the top three finalists for Best Wedding Cake in BC!
As first-timers to the Awards, this was an exciting achievement for us and it was a true pleasure to connect with other professionals who inject passion into the industry. Thank you to all of the couples we worked with in 2014 who put their trust in us for their special day. Also, sincere thanks to Amber Hughes Photography. Amber provided us with the exceptional photos she captured from Adrian & Clelia’s wedding, which was our recognized entry for the Awards. Can’t wait until next year!

More food stylin’

OUAT.FR.jpgWe’ve been preparing goodies for film sets again! Although sometimes scenes we work on end up on the cutting room floor, other times we are able to catch glimpse’s of them on our favourite shows.
Check out this Charlotte inspired lady finger cake that we created for a king’s ball that took place in “Once Upon A Time“.

We also created a few extra tiers to be cut and served for a later scene. They were to be a “raspberry champagne buttercream cake”. The best part of the scene is when the actress says “you have to try this cake – the royal baker really outdid [her]self!” – too funny!

Arc’teryx Vancouver’s 1st birthday!

by

Happy Birthday to the Vancouver Arc’teryx brand store!

This past Saturday the new West 4th location celebrated it’s first birthday. They invited the public to come in to enjoy refreshments, check out the new fall and winter lines, and even win some gear. We were more than happy to customize dozens of mini cupcakes for the party – which seemed to disappear faster than we could put them out! Congratulations Arc’teryx!
