Billy Talent 2

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of making a birthday cake for Ian D’Sa, the guitarist for the band Billy Talent. This Canadian band from Mississauga is currently on their 10 year anniversary tour! After having seen them perform live in years past, it was exciting to collaborate with them.

Their original vision for the cake was a simple recreation of Ian’s signature hairstyle. We got to talking and soon came up with a design that was much more fun and still made his unique ‘do the star. I quickly began their custom creation: a red velvet cake with fresh Italian buttercream between the layers.

The finished product was a hit – both to look at and to eat! Photos of the cake spread like wildfire over social media and I have been reading sweet messages and comments from their fans for days. Thanks for all the love, everyone – and Happy Birthday, Ian!

Once Upon A Time…

As previously posted, we got the chance to work with a food stylist for film & TV this summer. Last night the episode of Once Upon A Time we worked on aired. (Season 3, Ep. 3) It was pretty exciting to see all of our work on screen! All of the treats from When Pigs Fly Pastries, The Pie Hole & the stylist herself can be seen in the first 5 minutes of the episode. Check out these screen shots of the scene…

The Vancouver Sun Logo

When Pigs Fly Pastries currently operates out of a commercial space called Commissary Connect. Emily works along side many other talented vendors, including The Pie Hole and Soho Road. This space provides individual areas belonging to each business, with communal areas such as stoves, ovens, and sinks. Commissary kitchens are a way for food vendors to operate in a licensed, food safe environment without having to manage a storefront. From popsicle makers to pâté, and food trucks to juicers – Commissary Connect has a little bit of everything. It’s a great place to be able to connect with other local talents while pursuing your business’ own goals.

The kitchen was recently featured in The Vancouver Sun, with a brief spotlight on each of the people who operate there. To view the story click here. It’s a great little article featuring new ways for foodies to operate in the city!

The ReFlNERy things in life

by

the-refinery-mag-coverWe were both thrilled and honoured to be featured on the cover of the fall issue of The Refinery Magazine!

When Pigs Fly Pastries was asked to work on a spread in the current issue of the online magazine back in July. We were lucky to work with some great local businesses, including Gillian Stevens Photography, The Part & Parcel, as well as our friends at The Pie Hole. We featured autumn delights for a backyard DIY type wedding – including pumpkin pie cake, mini apple pecan cupcakes, apple cranberry pies and more.

In addition to the cover, photos and an original recipe of ours can be seen from page 129-131. Our treats from the shoot continue to be sprinkled throughout pages 142-148 as well.

Have a look at the entire issue of the Refinery Magazine here.

More photos from our shoot can also be found on the Part & Parcel Blog.

On Screen

by

On screenOn screenWhen Pigs Fly Pastries was recently approached by a woman who is a food stylist for film & television sets. Having had worked in film in the past, and having seen stylists at work, Emily has always had an admiration for the art in what they do. There are so many little tricks and secrets that make every edible element look like perfection!

She was thrilled to be asked to help out on the stylist’s current show. Emily provided a three tiered cake & nine dozen marzipan fruits. These goodies will appear in the episode of the unnamed show in the fall – details & air date to come!

Check out our feature in the current issue of Nouveau Magazine! This cake was for a lovely couple, Vanessa & Eric, who were married last September at the Terminal City Club. Their 4 tier cake mimicked elements from the room – including lace, pin-tucked table cloths, diamonds & their monogram.

Issues of the magazine can be bought on their website, or you can see more beautiful images from the day on the Jasalyn Thorne Photography Blog!

Smashing Creativity

by

kavanDo you or someone you know have a darling little one who’s about to have a first birthday? Why not celebrate and make memories in the most delicious, messy, and adorable way possible?!

Last year When Pigs Fly Pastries partnered with Family Creative, a videography & photography company, to feature “Smash Cake Sessions”. Small cakes made custom for the birthday child to do with whatever they please – whether it’s licking off the icing, smashing their fists into it, or crawling through it. Family Creative is there to capture whatever their reactions may be from beginning to end. They are always fun to shoot and perfect ways to mark the milestone, or even use for birthday invitations!
Check out their website for more information about Family Creative and for how to book your “smash” session today!

For more smash cake photos you can check them out in our “Happy Customers” album in our gallery.
